Small backyards in Whittier, Downey and Lakewood usually have to do three jobs at once — patio, play space and somewhere for the dog. Turf makes that possible, because the same surface can serve all three without any of them looking like a compromise.
A putting green does not need much space
A genuinely useful practice green fits in a surprisingly small footprint. Two or three cups at varied distances, a gentle break and a fringe collar give you enough variety to practice properly.
The surface spec is what makes it play like a real green: a short, dense pile, a firm compacted base, and sand infill brushed to a consistent depth so the ball rolls true rather than wandering.
Layering play zones and lawn
Rather than dividing a small yard into separate rooms, use one continuous turf plane and let furniture and planting define the zones. The space reads larger and stays flexible as the kids get older.
Under swing sets and climbing frames, we install a shock pad beneath the turf. It is invisible once finished and it changes what a fall feels like.
Borders that make it look designed
The difference between a turf lawn that looks premium and one that looks like a green rectangle is almost always the border. Paver stepping stones, a decomposed granite band, river rock against the fence line, or a low bender-board edge all give the turf a frame.
Stepping stones set flush into the turf are especially effective — they break up the plane and handle the traffic lane that would otherwise flatten first.

Plan around shade and sight lines
Put the seating and play areas where afternoon shade lands and keep the full-sun stretch for the putting surface, which nobody stands on for long.
Also plan your seam placement before installation. Seams that run across the middle of a small yard are visible from the patio; seams tucked under a stepping-stone line disappear.
